Profiler – Season One $20.62 Rated: NASynopsis: In the beginning, there was Manhunter, the 1986 Silence of the Lambs forerunner that first offered an FBI profiler as a pop-culture hero. And while it took William Petersen, the actor who portrayed that film’s profiler, a decade-plus and a specialty change to become a household name (on CSI), the profession itself got its own show a few years earlier — Profiler. Launched in tandem with The Pretender on Saturday nights in September 1996, Profiler stars Ally Walker as forensic psychologist Samantha “Sam” Waters. While the series clearly owes a debt to Lambs, Walker is no Jodie Foster, but she plays Sam with a steely strength that comes from being a single mother whose job is seeing gruesome murders through the serial killer’s eyes. Throughout the first season, she plays cat-and-mouse with Jack of All Trades, whose mounting body count includes her own husband. The series is also studded with creepy stand-alone episodes. The splendid fourth episode (“I’ll Be Watching You”) is not included here, alas; the music rights to the Police hit “Every Breath You Take” proved too pricey. But every other episode is here, and there is still much to recommend, as well as gore galore. In “Cruel and Unusual,” for instance, murder victims are discovered in cages with dry-cleaning bags over their heads, each one having been tortured differently. Profiler also had its share of offscreen carnage. As she discusses on the DVD commentary, Walker ultimately left the show, citing its lack of humor. This isn’t entirely fair. While Profiler never plays for laughs like The X-Files, it is laced with repartee, especially in Sam’s exchanges with fellow agent Bailey Malone (Robert Davi). But it definitely skews to the dark side, so if you have a favorite “blankey,” you might want to keep it handy when you pop this baby in.
